Reading, writing and adventure sports keep me centered and provide further impetus to my professional life. Reflecting upon this year, some of the salient books that opened my mind to new ideas, helped to explore a topic deeply or provided literary value — not a comprehensive list, but more a representative based on quick recall —

Shoe Dog by Phil Knight — a riveting account of Nike’s founding story and its rise to gradual dominance in the industry. On a side-note, enjoyed the movie ‘Air’ as well, that portrays how Michael Jordan came to lend his name to Nike, revolutionizing the world of sports endorsements/partnerships with big brands.

Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion by Robert Cialdini — A fascinating read on the topic of effective communication leading to building influence and persuading others effectively.

Creativity, Inc. by Ed Catmull story behind what made Pixar a trend-setting creative powerhouse for animation and movies

Selling to the C-Suite by Nicholas Read — an absolute riveting read for diagnosing client problems and providing solutions that align with the business.

Mega Deal Secrets by Jamal Reimer — a masterclass in Technology sales

Winning in the Digital Age by Nitin Seth — a topical book on dealing with the ongoing business and digital transformation in every industry.

On the Edge by Alison Levine — fascinating read from a business exec cum adventurer on the leadership lessons from climbing Mt Everest and exploring South Pole.

The Half Known Life by Pico Iyer — Acclaimed travel writer upends our understanding of world and culture with his incisive essays from cities across the globe.

Hiking with Nietzsche, On becoming who you are by John Kaag — Nietzsche frequented mountains seeking inspiration and ideas for his philosophical work, the author follows in his footsteps expounding Nietzsche’s theories.

Let my People go Surfing by Yvon Chouinard — Riveting book by the founder of iconic brand, Patagonia talking about his early days of outdoor adventures and building the business.

Hell’s Angels by Hunter Thompson — A literary classic on motorcycle group that grew out of San Francisco Bay area.

Landmarks by Robert MacfarlaneA dazzling work on lingua-franca of Natural world and its varied landscapes, focused on British isles but would appeal to outdoor lovers across the globe.

On the topic of adventures, I get my daily dose (as far as possible) of either swimming or cycling/running. Earlier in the summer, I participated in ‘Tour Delle Vigne’ cycling event through San Joaquin valley, motorcycle riding event called ‘Distinguished Gentleman’s ride’ and tried picking up Canoeing, Rowing and Surfing. One of the vivid highlights of the year is trying to summit Mt. Baldy, but had to turn back from ‘Devil’s backbone’ at nearly 9000 ft altitude, due to inclement weather (I write a poem about it in my upcoming book). Discovered Ireland as an adventure destination while taking part in a tour comprising of hiking, biking, surfing, kayaking and more.

I continue to ‘fan my flame’ by writing poems, short pieces on adventures for India Currents magazine and occasional participation in book fairs or public readings, time permitting. My upcoming book from AOS publishing called, ‘Yosemite of my Heart — Poems of Adventures in California’ is slated to be released in Feb. and I couldn’t be more excited.

As we enter into 2024, I am so much more excited on the professional front, as we foresee a tremendous opportunity ahead of us in the Technology business with product engineering, data and AI leading the business transformation and growth charter for our clients.
